Title - Jesus is alive so we have a life of victory
Bible: John 21:1-14
Key verse :12
1Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way:
2 Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together.
3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.
5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?” “No,” they answered.
6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.
7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.
8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.
9 When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.
10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.”
11 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn.
12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.
13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.
14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.
Greeting to you in the marvelous name of Lord Jesus Christ.
It is a wonderful for me to stand in front on this pulpit and share God’s word.
Month of April has been wonderful for me so far, 7 days morning prayer time, psalm Sunday, good Friday, easter Sunday and metro vihar services.
Everything was amazing, may God bless all of you, whatever you did in those meeting of the kingdom of the lord.
Let’s move on to today’s word John 21:1-14
Let’s pray.
Our dear Lord, we all thank you for the love of that cross and thank you for the resurrection of Jesus on the third day so that we may have hope of victory.
Lord keeps your blessing over yours today words and help us to accept it. We all pray in the name of Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen.
After the death of Jesus Christ, His all disciples were scattered here and there. And most of them went back in there same normal life.
As we seen in today text some of them went back to sea of galilee
Let’s see verse 1-2
1. The scene take place after Easter (1-2)
On this verse apostle John shares what is happening, disciple of Jesus traveled back to sea of galilee, and before this Jesus had already appeared to some people. He had appeared to Mary Magdalene and some other woman and along with the two people going towards the city of Emmaus. After it he appeared in front of Thomas.
But peter, Thomas, Nathanael, the sons of Zebedee (John and James) and two other disciples were all together near the sea of Galilee. They waiting for the lord to appear as He had said he would (Mark 16:7).
But this waiting was not easy for them, waiting for Jesus for them hard because the past 3 ½ years Jesus had been in their life, they had wake up and found Jesus somewhere near to them, they easily found Jesus and follow Jesus wherever Jesus wanted to go.
Jesus was their leader and they were his disciple, and it was their job to obey Jesus commands and follow his direction. Every day was an adventure for them, going out to teach, preach, and heal.
But now over the past few days Jesus had not shown and maybe they were bored, and they were worry what they were going to do next and maybe they had many questions.
For most of disciples they were back home, they had been united with their families, loved one and maybe they started some work.
I think they were also wondering what is coming next?
Let’s see verse 3
2. They went fishing (3)
3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
Here peter step forward and went for fishing, because he has tired of just waiting, and yet Jesus has not shown them and instead of just sitting he went for fishing and others also joined to him.
Maybe there families needed money, and without Jesus there was no mission, no income and no direction.
Apostle peter was not type of the person to sit, he liked action, and he liked to be doing something therefore he decided that for himself he will do something, so he went back to do what he knew best.
Do you know what he knew best? Fishing
some others decided that they would go with peter, because they could not just sit and wait for Jesus.
They were professional fishermen, they knew what it was to cast a net, they knew how to get fish and where they will get fish. It was in their DNA, because their fathers and grandfather were also fishermen.
But today they did not get nothing, whole night they had casted their nets 10 or 20 times hoping to get some fishes but caught nothing.
On next morning their nets and their stomach were both empty, they could not able to get even one fish, they were tired, frustrated, and disappointed
Peter, James, John and Andrew were skilled fishermen, what had happened today? If they could not able to caught any fish how would they take care their children, families.
They caught nothing
Have you ever felt that way?
You have worked hard on some project but you had been lost.
you travelled toward Agra for taj mahal but you find it is closed because of Friday.
you study hard on whole night but the next morning all questions came out of what you did not study.
You worked honestly in your office and when you got your salary someone stole your salary.
You are giving your best but you are not getting anything.
I hope we all experienced or we are experiencing like this men in this boat, doing their best to get fish but come with empty nets.
We all have had a time when we feel like we have wasted our energy, wasted our time, even wasted our money.
When the Israelites walked and stood in front of the great sea after walking so much the lord split the sea into two.
When Abraham and Sarah were defeated that they would no longer have any descendants the lord opened Sarah’s womb.
When people thought that Jesus is now dead then on the third day the lord raised him
Although our circumstance may make us feel lost, but brothers and sisters we are not lost because our lord is great and alive. Hallelujah
Let’s see what happens, when the disciple were very disappointed.
4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.
5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?” “No,” they answered.
3. The stranger (4-5)
They were disappointed, tired, hungry and were empty.
Jesus appeared on the shore, but like Mary Magdalene they did not first recognized Jesus Christ.
Jesus on the shore begins by asked them friends haven’t you any fish?
His means here Have you caught any fish?
Did not Jesus know that they had not caught any fish?
Jesus knew that they had not caught any fish, but he wanted his disciples to say by themselves. When we have confessed our lack of ability, then he will supply our needs.
So when Jesus(stranger) asked them have not you any fish? They replied “NO”.
Let’s see verse 6-8
6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.
7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.
8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.
IV The catch and recognition of Jesus (6-8)
They had not yet recognized Jesus, so for them Jesus is still stranger, and when Jesus said throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some fish.
When we fail in our work, then we think that let try one more time, the same thing disciples did.
Once again by the advice of some stranger person they have cast a net.
But some amazing things happened here, all kinds of fish rush into their net.
And when John looked out and suddenly he recognized that stranger is Lord Jesus Christ.
Peter was always quick to act, as soon as peter heard that he jumped into the water.
Jesus did not angry at the disciples, even Jesus did not tell that that they were without faith, Jesus did not criticize them for going back into their professional work, I do not know why? but here Jesus wanted to help them.
Because Jesus wanted to teach them that there are something that he can see but they cannot. Jesus taught them that they need Jesus to be successful no matter what they are doing.
Jesus can see things that we cannot see.
When prophet Samuel was upset that God has rejected king Saul, God instructed to Samuel go to Jesse’s house and anoint the next king.
But Samuel was looking outer look of Jesse’s son, but God was rejecting his one after the other son of Jesse’.
God looked on the inside, he did not see a king inside any the first seven sons of Jesse.
When Jesse’s 8th son come from the fields, whose name was David, but he was so small, he was too young, he did not look like a king. But in his heart there was a deep and passionate love for God and for the people of Israel.
When people saw Abraham and Sarah they saw was an old man and woman, even themselves had lost hope that they would never become a father and mother. But what God can see, we cannot see, God saw a couple who were still able to have the promise child, both became parents at the age of over 90 years old.
When people saw Moses, he was an old man taking care a sheep, but when God saw Moses, He saw a great leader, He saw Israel’s greater law giver, He saw a man whom he could trust and talk.
Dear brothers and sisters
What we see is not always what God sees. We need to let God show us things, we need to let God open up our eyes, and this cannot happen until we come to prayer or come to his living words.
All night peter, John, James, Andrew, Thomas and some more disciples had thrown their nets, they had discussed different- 2 plan and even they had visited best place to get fishes , but they caught nothing.
But Jesus could see the fish, Jesus knew where the fish were swimming, Jesus knew that fishes are just right side of their boat, Because Jesus knew that where He, His father and the Holy Spirit had put them.
Today where we are or you are maybe you are not able to understand everything or be able to see everything, it is okay.
That is not our ability, but our risen Jesus Christ, HE HAS ABILITY TO SEE EVERYTHING.
Jesus has ability to lead us in the right direction, Jesus knows where the fish are.
Jesus will lead us to victory.
Let’s see verse 9-14
V. Jesus leads us to a victorious life (9-14)
Do you believe that Jesus is alive and He is leading us towards this victorious life?
In today’s word Jesus said one thing and suddenly everything changed. One word from Jesus, one command from Jesus, one insight from Jesus and everything has changed.
Disciples experienced an wonderful thing that they were able to eat a breakfast with the Risen Christ.
Dear brothers and sisters
God wants us to enjoy life, God wants to bless us and rain down all kinds of blessing on us, God wants us to be victorious and he wants us to live an abundant life.
Moses got to part the Red sea
Esther got to free her people
Zachariah got to see an angel
Nehemiah got to build a citywide wall in just 2 months
Solomon got to build the house of might God
Daniel got to see vision and interpret dreams
Paul and silas got see open jail
Peter got to heal people with his shadow
Lazarus got to come out of the grave
Peter got to walk on water and little boy got to watch by his lunch over 5000 people eat.
Did all this happen by these people themselves? No
It was happened because God wanted.
Dear brothers and sisters
As we have celebrated easter Sunday, and we have heard that Jesus is alive.
A person that stood on that sea shore is our Jesus, he is ready to say something to us.
He is waiting for us to listen him, to follow his words, and to experience victorious life.
He is waiting for us that we may cast a net at his leading.
He is waiting for us to give us blessing
He is waiting for us that we may give him whatever he wants from us.
He is waiting for us to sit down with him and celebrate with him.
Jesus is alive, therefore he can see what we cannot.
Jesus is alive, therefore we have a life of victory.
Amen..
