Title – Fruit of the Spirit is Patience
Bible – Galatians 5:16-26
Good morning people of God
Once again, I am glad to welcome you to the house of living God.
I hope you all are healthy and growing well in Jesus Christ.
We are growing in Christ, do you believe? can you remember when you came the first time to this church, where were you? And where are you now? You will be able to see that the Lord has raised you in him.
In Deuteronomy, if you will pay attention to my command then you will always be at the top(head), never at the bottom (Tail).
I hope, we will follow Jesus and grow more in our spiritual life
Last week for three days I was in the Seminar of Hebrew study, where I leaned a deep fact of connectivity between the Old Testament and New Testament, even the same time, I am thankful to God that we have started our bible study of acts, even some others brothers and sisters also started their bible study. It is my prayer to God that we grow in spirit.
As we all know, we are on the sermon series of the fruit of the spirit.
Last two weeks we learned about the fruit of the spirit is love (Agape), Joy, and peace.
Does anyone here want to share, where they practiced love, joy, or peace in such a situation with the help of the Holy Spirit?
Always remember this fruit produced only by the Holy Spirit, it does not mean that we cannot in the flesh or our own ability produce this fruit.
But it is a difference between seeing a bowl of plastic fruit on the table and seeing a bowl of real fruit on the table.
22. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23. gentleness and self-control. Against such things, there is no law
Apple trees produce apples, banana trees produce bananas, orange trees produce orange and Christian trees produce love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. This fruit must be avid in the life of those who are rooted in Jesus Christ.
Let’s pray.
Today we are going to learn very important fruit of the spirit is patience.
As we are living in the 21st century, where it is so difficult to keep patience because we are living in a culture of impatience.
Everything became instant, instant coffee, instant food, 30 minutes domino’s pizza, instant money from ATM, instant ice cream, instant mail, instant delivery (same day Amazon), etc.
Even in our country India, people really do not want to keep patience.
Last week when I was going back from church to my home, I stopped my bike on the road because of red light, but an auto driver started a very loud horn from behind me, I said it is red light, but he doesn't want to stop in that red light.
Whenever I see in our government office, bank, hospital, metro, people do not want to stand in line, they are so impatience that they want their work to be done first, they want to go first, they want to get first, therefore they do not want to stand in line, and due to their lack of patience, there is often an atmosphere of fighting.
Between husband and wife do not have patience, therefore the rate of divorce is increasing in our country. The student does not have patience, therefore, they give up their study, even believers in the church also do not have patience in God’s promise, therefore, they want to go back to the world, where things are instant.
But before looking into today's bible, I want to tell you that it’s God’s will for us to be patient Amen.
So, what is patience?
Cambridge dictionary says patience is the “ability to wait”, or suffer without complaining”.
Another dictionary says, the ability to continue waiting or doing something for a long time without becoming angry or anxious,
The ability to accept trouble and other people's annoying behavior without complaining or becoming angry.
Hebrew word Savlanut which means patience but it comes from the root meaning “to bear” or “to suffer”.
If you will see in the KJV bible there is no mention of patience but written long-suffering
Can we ask ourselves that am i endurance?
If you are living your life in a good way, with joy and someone come to you and starts to disturb you or tease you, how do you react?
The world has one proverb Tit for Tat, but dear brothers and sisters God does not teach us this thing.
So, it is very essential to have patience in our life, because we are living in a world, where we get quick to anger, quick to get revenge, quick to respond, quick to hit someone.
I want to encourage you if you are impatient in your life, quick to anger, then we have to take this attribute of spirit is called patience/long-suffering.
In the bible, we can see there were many places Jesus was persecuted.
Let’s look into Matthew 27:11-14 (ESV)
11 Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You have said so.” 12 But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he gave no answer. 13 Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?” 14 But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge so that the governor was greatly amazed.
Here false accusations are bring brought against Jesus Christ, false witnesses are being presented, but in this situation, we can see Jesus' nature/character that “Jesus did not response anything”.
Jesus did not say anything.
How do we respond? Maybe we want to take revenge, when I was around 14 years old, my family had a division of property and my mother used to tell me all the time that it was not fair with them regarding the property and because of this, I was angry and hated on my relative at that time.
But as I grew up in Jesus Christ, the Lord got me out of such thoughts and taught me to be patient that God does everything well and all things are under his control, I need to spend my life in his spirit.
This is the character of our God; he is a long-suffering God.
God never punishes us quickly, but he waits for us.
God keep patience with us, as we make mistakes.
we do not want to listen to him, but still, he keeps patience with us. (Story of a parodical son)
In the Old Testament Bible exodus 34:5-6
5 The LORD descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD.
This is the incident when the people of Israel had made a golden calf for themselves, and seeing this, Moses lost his temper and broke the 10 commandment placards.
6 The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.
This is the nature of the lord; he is slow to anger. He keeps patience.
In Psalm 103 David says
8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever
God is slow to anger, and he will not keep his anger forever.
Let’s see one more verse, where we can get to know his character and he wants to make our patience too.
1 peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
Many times, we complain to God when you will come again, why do not you come right now, do not you see that I am so sad?
But our God's character is patient, he wants to give more chance to us and everyone to repent so that we may not perish but get eternal life.
Paul says in Philippians 2:5 जैसा मसीह यीशु का स्वभाव था वैसा ही तुम्हारा भी स्वभाव हो;
So, patience is the attribute of our lord therefore if we say I am the believer of Jesus Christ, then this fruit of the spirit is patience must be in us.
And as believers when we face persecution or false punishment are imposed over us.
So does the fruit of the spirit work in us at that time, do we keep our patience at that time, do we remain within our tolerance? Or we give chance the Satan (Enemy) in our life.
Satan knows very well how to win the battle with us, he wants to come into our lives and forces us to fight, he forces us to lose our tolerance and when we lose our patience, the Satna knows that he has won because he has done his work, he has stolen the attribute of God from us and put his attribute in us, fight, revenge, jealous, hated that which the Lord never teaches us.
There was one author who said like this “Patience strengthens the soul, patience sweetens our sense, patience calms our anger, patience quells jealousy, patience removes pride, patience control tongue, and patience sustains the hands.
Sometimes we fall down in our life, sometimes we fail, because we do not have patience, we do not have long-suffering, we want to take revenge, we do not want to tolerate embarrassment, we want to run, but do not want to stop and listen to the lord.
We want to be successful preachers, good worshiper leaders, good counselors, successful in the office within one day but do not try to follow in God's word.
In the bible, there are many examples of impatience.
In the garden of Eden, God said Adam and eve that do not eat the fruit of knowledge and evil, they did not keep patience, therefore they did sin.
There was Sara she wanted to be a mother, but she does not want to keep patience with God, therefore she gave Hagar (female servant) to Abraham, and told to him take her and give me a child.
Moses who also lost his patience, God told to him, go to rock and rock will give you water but she did not talk with rock, but he used his stick over the rock, therefore Moses could not able to enter into promised land
There were many examples in the bible, who did not keep endure in their life, but those who endured the Lord raised them.
Joseph, whose brothers opposed him, persecuted him, put him in a pit, sold him, and finally, he was put in jail. But joseph keep his patience and God blessed him
In the Bible when persecution came in Job’s life, when the pain came in his life, he remained faithful, he endured, and when his endurance was tested God blessed him twice.
The lord is patient and he wants that the attribute of the lord should be in us too.
Paul says in Roman 12:12,14,17,19-21
12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.
17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honourable in the sight of all.
19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”
20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”
21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Jesus also overcomes by evil with good. Amen
(John 18:10-11) When Jesus was in Gethsemane's garden, soldier came to arrest Jesus, so Peter did not keep patience, he could not able to endure. He took his sword, cut off the right ear of the high priest’s servant.
Jesus said to peter put your sword into its sheath, those who fight with the sword they will die with it, we do not have to fight with a sword, Jesus showed him, love, Jesus lifted his ear with love and put it again.
Until this peter received the Holy Spirit, there was no tolerance in him, but when the Holy Spirit came in him, he had learned to endure, and this same peter ready to go to prison, ready to be killed and even ready to die for Jesus Christ. Because now the attribute of Jesus Christ in him.
Dear brothers and sisters
I want to encourage you this morning to bring patience inside of your life, Let the Holy Spirit do his work in your life, God will make you patient. Say the Holy spirit come in my life.
I want to ask will you allow this gift of the spirit to fill your life? Will you allow this gift to appear in your life like fruit? Amen.
I hope we are practicing love, joy peace, and today I want you may practice in this week one more attribute of Jesus Christ that is patience.
May God bless us all and help us to live on this earth with a helper called HOLY SPIRIT
Amen
